    Students at East High School in Salt Lake City took matters into their own hands when they were confronted with the realities of segregation and separatist attitudes at their school. After 43 students had some hard conversations about privilege, cliques, and inequity, they greatly improved representation in the student governing body and started to break down the social (segregated) barriers of cliques in the lunchroom. Students and teachers still consider a lot of work to be done but can also testify to how much the experience has changed their perspective on things.

  • In a small Washington town with no youth shelters, one woman keeps kids off the streets

  • Black scholars find support, success in Highline College pilot program

    Coaches have unique relationships with their players and Milwaukee is using that to help young men create healthy, respectful relationships as part of a pilot project using the curriculum Coaching Boys Into Men. The training uses ideas of teamwork and sports to apply those principles to actual situations and relationships. An evaluation of the curriculum in Sacramento found participants were less likely to commit abuse and more likely to intervene when they witness problematic behavior by peers.

    Researchers are using an approach that has reduced unsafe drinking on college campuses and applying it to preventing sexual assault and harassment by giving students actual facts about what their peers are doing and thinking. In this positive social norms approach, organizers use surveys of attitudes to correct misperceptions that teens peers don’t care about harassment or assault. Anecdotally it seems to be making a difference in behavior, although a full analysis is still in process.

  • In Sacramento, trying to stop a killing before it happens

    Sacramento is implementing a program developed in 2011 in Richmond, Calif., that showed success curtailing gun violence among young men caught up in gangs or potential shootings. They get numerous social services and mentoring from men previously incarcerated. Stipends are a controversial part of the program, but a review of the Richmond program in 2015 found most participants were still alive and had not suffered a gun related injury, or been arrested for gun-related activity.
