  • Bosnian Seniors Fight Loneliness Through Arts and Crafts

    Nas Most uses artistic and cultural initiatives to combat loneliness among seniors. Over seven years, informal weekly meet-ups turned into formal painting and handicraft courses and membership grew from 30 to over 100 seniors. The association also organizes events to exhibit members’ works and partners with other groups to create and share podcasts, organize concerts, and offer other artistic events for seniors. Cultural exchanges with organizations in Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, and Serbia also help build social connections, which provide physical and mental health benefits for seniors.

  • Online Art Keeps Bosnia's Isolated Seniors Connected in Pandemic

    Before the coronavirus pandemic, Our Bridge in Bosnia provided services to seniors to combat social isolation. Despite having to shut down in-person classes due to the pandemic, both groups now use online art and music classes to reach people who are isolated and at risk of depression. The group joined with the Serbian association, Art Aparat, to offer singing, art, and handicraft classes by video. In person connections are preferred and missed, but the group adapted to changing circumstances to provide even more isolated seniors with social connections, and the partnership allows for cultural exchanges.

  • Rome's ‘invisible' immigrants offer an alternative view of the Eternal City

    Guide Invisibili is an audio storytelling initiative by Laboratorio 53 that increases understanding of Rome’s refugee and immigrant communities. 40 young people, who left their home countries due to conflicts and instability, record their perceptions of the city and point out similarities between life in their home cities and Rome. The free audio tours include moderated discussions with the storytellers and are opportunities to break down barriers, especially with anti-immigrant sentiments and racially motivated attacks increasing. Despite not being well known, 2,500 people have participated.

  • An Abandoned Roman Salami Factory Becomes an Illegal, Inhabited Museum

    About 200 people from around the world, most of whom were homeless, occupied a former meat factory where they cleaned the space and set up homes. An Italian artist worked with residents to create a unique venue that exhibits murals, paintings, and installations of over 300 artists from around the world. The museum does not have a budget, the artists donate their works, and it operates on a democratic concept where artists from different backgrounds and styles work together. Despite not occupying the space legally, residents believe that the value the art offers to society prevented them from being evicted.
