Online respite training helps build 'networks of support'

More than fifty years ago, Cuba eradicated widespread illiteracy in one calendar year, and its literacy rate still leads the world. They achieved it by sending "brigades" of teachers and students to teach adults and children for two weeks.

In a rapidly gentrifying Mexico City neighborhood, two artists refurbished an icon and set up an altar for Santa Mari La Juaricua, a saint to protect residents from eviction. The saint raises awareness and acts as a reminder about housing issues and the icon has been taken up by the residents and has been used in processions and protests.

Math requirements are a common barrier preventing students from successfully graduating from community college in Washington state. Schools are offering a new way for non-STEM majors to earn the credit; Statway teaches students accessible statistics mixed with real-world examples as an alternate to the traditional algebra-precalculus trajectory.

The Women’s Collective is a nonprofit that works with more than 10,000 subsistence farmers in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu to promote food security using millets, a crop resilient to drought and climate change. For Pavitra, one of those farmers, she began cultivating the ancient grains in 2015 and now has more than enough food to feed her family year-round. However, there’s a lack of public investment in millet production and machinery. And there’s no unified effort to create demand for millets: Some state governments lead the charge and in other states, it’s led by grassroots organizations.

Elle a nommé l'un d'entre eux la "Maison des Fées". 36 femmes exilées sont hébergées avec leurs bébés. Elles bénéficient d'une solution de garde pour leurs enfants, d'un soutien du personnel de l'hôtel et de travailleurs sociaux.

En Suisse, l’association Appartenances fait appel à 140 interprètes communautaires pour favoriser l'autonomie des personnes migrantes. Leur mission : traduire, certes, mais surtout de dissiper les méprises potentielles dues aux différences culturelles entre une personne migrante et un professionnel de santé ou du social. Ces interprètes ont tous eux-mêmes un parcours migratoire derrière eux qui permet de saisir les nuances entre le pays d’origine de la personne migrante et le pays d’accueil.

Trace the Face, un site de la Croix-Rouge, aide les migrants à localiser leurs proches perdus sur la route de l’exil. Depuis 2013, 5 731 photos de personnes recherchant quelqu’un ont été publiées sur Trace the Face et 161 personnes ont pu retrouver un proche.

A New York-based nonprofit called Students for a Free Tibet is training Tibetans in "how to stage nonviolent protests." This effort, in conjunction with other Tibetan NGOs, has helped activists in Dharamsala, India to become "more organized, media savvy and technologically sophisticated," which in turn has increased the number of people who have come together to participate in the nonviolent protests.

The Diné Naazbaa Partnership (DNP) serves Navajo Nation veterans, connecting them with food, medication, transportation and other necessities, as they’re more likely to be unemployed and far less likely to use or apply for VA services. The DNP has connected with about 1,228 of the 14,700 veterans on the Navajo Nation and has partnered with 370 groups to fund projects that provide housing improvements and emergency financial aid to veterans.

In response to an influx of Haitian immigrants in the area, several Indianapolis community groups joined forces to support them. These groups connect them to English language services, job opportunities, advocacy support, and assistance in registering their children for school or getting a driver’s license, all while fostering a sense of community and connection.
